Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup gram flour (besan)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon coriander powder oil for frying

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine gram flour, salt, turmeric, chilli powder, cumin seeds, garam masala, and coriander powder.
  2. Add the sliced onions and toss to coat evenly in the dry mixture.
  3. Gradually pour in the water, stirring until the onions are well coated and the batter clings to them — it should be thick, not runny.
  4. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
  5. Drop small portions of the onion mixture into the hot oil using your hand or a spoon.
  6. Fry until golden brown and crisp, turning occasionally to cook evenly.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels before serving.
