Learn about Woodland Eggs, where hens roam freely among the trees.

Native trees, olive trees, poplar trees, birch trees, pine trees, these are some of the trees that the hens love at Woodland.

On their beautiful farms, their hens enjoy the freedom of secure paddocks, where, in addition to the many trees, they are provided with purpose-built and natural shelters. Every hen can roam as far and wide as she likes, within the security of their paddocks.

When outside the barn the hens are free to do what they love doing. For most of the day they’ll hang out under the trees. Foraging for grubs and insects and dustbathing are just a few of the things they can get up to.

This is why they believe our eggs are the very best eggs you can buy – wholesome, tasty and produced with the welfare of the hen and the care for the environment.

The Hens

The hens on their free range farms are Brown Shavers or Hylines, breeds known for their productivity, and the consistent quality of the eggs they lay.

Naturally gregarious, they love the free range life. Wandering green pastures or secure under the canopy of trees large and small, they forage for a variety of insects, worms and other natural foods, and do what hens love to do.

The Farms

Woodland eggs mostly originate from three beautiful rural properties located in Waitaki, one of the most unspoiled areas of the South Island. The Waitaki region is noted for its temperate climate, clean air, and excellent water quality.

These properties have impressive stands of trees, along with smaller copses that also provide shade and shelter for our hens. This charming woodland character was the inspiration for their brand name. Woodland eggs are also supplied by farms further afield.

Woodland are very picky about the farms that join the Woodland family. They must provide a very similar woodland environment, and the farmers themselves must be as passionate about and committed to hen welfare as the team at Woodland are.

The Eggs

Eggs are collected daily from the nesting boxes in the living areas where the hens spend the night. Only the eggs collected from these nesting boxes are graded and then packed.

It’s always a joy to buy eggs from a stall at the farm gate produced direct from the farm. Part of the pleasure is knowing exactly where those eggs came from.

Woodland gives you that same joy when you buy your eggs in the supermarket. Each one of their eggs is stamped with a Woodland tree symbol and a traceable code before it leaves the farm, that lets you find out where it was laid.
